Private Tutor Safety: Simple Steps Every Tutor Should Follow
Whether you tutor in a living room, a coffee shop, or over video call, safety matters. A few easy habits can protect you, your student, and your peace of mind.
Before the First Session: Check, Confirm, Prepare
Start with a basic background check. Ask for a photo ID and run a quick online search. If the student’s parent is the client, request a copy of their driver’s licence too. Having this info on file isn’t creepy – it’s a safety net.
Next, lock down the location. Meet in a public place for the first lesson, like a library or community centre. Public spaces deter unwanted behaviour and give you a neutral environment to gauge comfort levels.
If you’re teaching online, use a platform with end‑to‑end encryption and a waiting room feature. Send the meeting link only after you’ve verified the client’s email address. Keep a screenshot of the participant list for your records.
During the Lesson: Stay Alert and Communicate
Set clear boundaries from the start. Explain the tutoring schedule, break times, and any house rules. A short “safety chat” – “If you ever feel uncomfortable, just let me know” – builds trust and shows you take safety seriously.
Keep an eye on body language. If a student or parent seems uneasy, address it quickly. For online sessions, enable the camera and make sure both sides stay visible. If the connection drops, end the call and reschedule rather than continuing in a hidden chat.
Never accept cash in a secluded area. Use digital payments that leave a trail. A receipt not only helps with bookkeeping but also provides proof of the transaction.
Plan an emergency exit. Know the nearest exit in a physical venue and have a phone charged and handy. For virtual lessons, have a quick‑access “Leave Meeting” button and keep a backup device ready.
Finally, document each session. A short note about what you covered, the time, and any incidents helps you track progress and provides evidence if anything goes wrong.
By following these straightforward steps, you make tutoring a safe, focused, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Safety isn’t a one‑time checklist – it’s a habit you build with every lesson.
